Effective Classroom Management
What is Effective Classroom Management?
"Effective classroom management requires awareness, patience, good timing, boundaries, and instinct. There's nothing easy about shepherding a large group of easily distractible young people with different skills and temperaments along a meaningful learning journey" - Source
Introduction
In the old style of classroom management, the teacher was an authoritarian type figure who used punishment and consequence in instruction in order to instruct. While this may work with motivated, high achieving students, it is likely to leave a lot of at-risk or struggling students behind. This 'obedience model' can foster feelings such as helplessness, lack of responsibility, and an inability to think clearly and critically for many students. Additionally, it may stifle a student's desire to learn and hinder the ability to create positive student-teacher relationships.
Creating a positive, student-centered environment can have the following benefits:
-Students own and help solve problems
-Higher levels of intrinsic motivation
-Feeling of emotional and physical safety and well-being
-Greater sense of dignity and belonging
-Lower amounts of stress for teacher and students
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
In 1943, psychologist Abraham Maslow developed a hierarchy of needs. In this, his goal was to develop a hierarchy in which a person can achieve one's fullest potential, or 'self-actualization.' (Read more about his hierarchy here). As teachers, we want to see our students work towards their fullest potential. Yet, many students have not met the lower layers of this hierarchy. Through effective classroom management and establishing a positive learning environment, we can help students to reach these most basic layers. If we do, their capability for learning will be significantly increased.
