Effective Classroom Management
Classroom Procedures
Introduction
What are the expectations in your classroom? How do students remember them? Who creates them? Do students understand them, and how do you know? Are they posted? Where do students get make up work? What is the procedure for restroom use? Entering class? Handing in work? Group work? How many rules do you have?
There are so many questions to consider in creating classroom procedures as well as so many viewpoints. Some teachers have one single rule, while others may have 55 (click here). Below are some basic guidelines in creating classroom procedures.
Guidelines
-Limited in number so they can be remembered
-Stated in positive terms
-Consistent with school rules
-Created with student buy-in
-Consistent with accountability
As teachers, we often look at problems we face in the classroom and try to address these problems. However, we should first look to the source of the problem--what is generating it in the first place--and work on changing that.
Streamlining Classroom Procedures
There are so many elements to the classroom. Some things to consider in creating procedures include what to do for:
-Entering class
-Handing in assignments
-Transitioning between activities
-Getting make-up work
-Using the restroom
-Answering questions
-Getting supplies
-Fire drills
Six Steps for Teaching Procedures
1. Introduce it to students.
2. Ask students questions in order to determine and understand its importance
3. Show students a step-by-step breakdown on the procedure (modeling)
4. Practice the procedure if necessary
5. Check for clarity and understanding of procedure
6. Review procedures

Below are videos that reflect on classroom management procedures and discussion questions that follow. Additionally, I have provided links to additional resources regarding the development of classroom procedures.
