Unit Three - The Constitutional Convention
As the colonists were fighting for independence from Britain, a need for their own form of self-government began to arise. In creating their first government, they looked at all aspects of the British Parliament that they did not like--taxation without representation; a strong central figure; and a powerful national government. As they created the "Articles of Confederation," they avoided all of these features of government. Unfortunately, the Articles of Confederation were a complete disaster! As they met to amend, or change, the Articles, it was decided that an entirely new constitution should be written. Thus, the Constitutional Convention took place.
